Gamifying Grocery Discovery
How "Holi Heist" Drove Engagement and Cart Value in BigBasket

Design Case Study • BigBasket

Role

Solo Product Designer (UX Architecture, UI, Custom Illustrations, & Motion

Scope

In-App Gamification & Cart Conversion Flow

Timeline

3 Weeks (Concept Project)

Users open grocery apps out of pure utility, stock their cart, check out, and close the app immediately. What happens when you inject cinematic Sholay nostalgia and gamified loot-drops into the mundane grocery browsing loop during a festival like Holi?

The Business Reality

BigBasket sees massive transaction spikes during festival weeks, but post-festival retention drops flat. The app lacks emotional stickiness or habit loops outside of planned monthly grocery restocks.

The Design Challenge

How might we increase daily app sessions, session length, and category discovery (pushing users to buy fresh fruits, dairy, or festive snack kits alongside staples) during the high-intent Holi shopping window without cluttering the core e-commerce workflow?

The Solution Journey

Step 1: Organic Discovery via the Mid-Scroll "Holi Heist" Banner

User State

Siva is scrolling down the main BigBasket home page past category tiles (Gulal & pichkaris, Sweets & recipes, Party picks). He is exploring seasonal festive essentials.

The Design Move

Instead of hiding the game inside a separate menu, a high-impact, cinematic "Holi Heist" banner (powered by Surf Excel & Tang) is placed right in the middle of the scroll flow above the bottom navigation bar

Tapping the yellow "Let's Play" CTA button immediately breaks the utilitarian shopping routine and launches the interactive game container.

Step 2: Entering the Cinematic Quest

User State

Siva engages with the custom Sholay-inspired character illustration and reads the immersive storytelling premise

The Design Move

Instead of a complex tutorial, the game mechanics are communicated instantly through clear instructions and a high-stakes goal ("You have 10 shots, hit at least 8 to win!"), ending with a prominent, frictionless "Let's Play" CTA button that launches the gameplay loop.

User State

Siva is festive reward and wants to apply it instantly to his grocery cart.

The Design Move

The reward auto-syncs with his active basket, driving immediate conversion and bridging festive entertainment with high-intent grocery checkout.

Step 3: Seamless Transition to Cart Conversion

Arrow keys move this item. Escape leaves it.

The Iterations

Draft

    Ideation

      Final

        Animation Production

Rig the character for whole packed animation cycles

sed spring-physics on the reward coin-drop sequence to replicate arcade feedback loops, maximizing the psychological reward of completing a quest.

        What This Project Taught Me

A brilliant feature wrapped in a poor transition flow is still a failed design. Engagement loops must lead directly to utility

Thank you for taking the time

Building an end-to-end gamified experience—from custom vector illustrations and UI architecture to smooth micro-interactions—taught me how deeply design can shape user retention and emotional engagement.
